About Us

The Auckland Indian Retailers Association (AIRA) was founded in 2011 with the vision of creating a united platform for Indian business owners and retailers across Auckland. The primary aim of the association was to offer mutual support, foster collaboration, and promote the growth and development of Indian-owned retail businesses in the region. What began as a modest initiative by a small group of dedicated entrepreneurs has, over time, evolved into a robust and influential organization representing the interests of over 100 Indian businesses across Auckland.

The formation of AIRA was driven by a shared understanding among Indian retailers of the unique challenges they faced in a competitive and ever-changing business environment. By banding together under a common umbrella, these business owners recognized that they could amplify their voices, share resources, and advocate for their needs more effectively. At the helm of this pioneering effort was the association’s founding president, Mr. Murari Lal Aggarwal. With his dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to community welfare, Mr. Aggarwal laid the foundation for what would become one of the most dynamic and respected retail associations in Auckland’s multicultural landscape.

Over the past decade, AIRA has grown not just in numbers, but in purpose and impact. The association has provided a vital support network for its members, offering guidance on industry best practices, compliance with local regulations, and navigating economic challenges. Through seminars, networking events, and advocacy efforts, AIRA has empowered Indian retailers to thrive while also contributing meaningfully to Auckland’s broader economy and cultural diversity.

Leadership has played a key role in AIRA’s continued success and evolution. After Mr. Aggarwal’s foundational presidency, the association has been guided by a series of visionary leaders who have each brought their own strengths and perspectives to the role. Mr. Amba Ram built on the early momentum by fostering deeper relationships within the community and expanding the association’s outreach. Dr. Preet, with a background in both medicine and business, emphasized strategic growth and health-conscious retail practices, particularly during the challenging COVID-19 period. Under Mr. Gurdeep Singh’s tenure, AIRA strengthened its partnerships with local government bodies and other multicultural organizations, further solidifying its reputation as a vital contributor to Auckland’s retail scene.

Currently, the association is led by Mr. Rajesh Goyal, a respected entrepreneur and community figure known for his pragmatic leadership and inclusive approach. Mr. Goyal continues to lead AIRA with a clear sense of purpose, focusing on unity, innovation, and sustainable progress. His leadership has seen the introduction of new initiatives aimed at digital transformation, youth involvement, and expanding AIRA’s presence beyond Auckland to potentially support Indian retailers in other parts of New Zealand.

AIRA remains committed to its founding values of unity, mutual support, and collective growth. As it looks to the future, the association aims to further empower its members, promote cultural heritage, and create new opportunities for Indian retailers to succeed and contribute positively to the New Zealand economy.

Papatoetoe – Dreamed Little India

At the heart of AIRA is Papatoetoe, lovingly known as “Little India” – a vibrant and diverse hub of Indian culture, tradition, and enterprise. In the 1970s, it was already a flourishing commercial center, home to major retailers like Farmers, and landmarks like Hunters Inn on Charles Street, where a lunch reservation could take up to three months.

Today, Papatoetoe continues to thrive with:
• 8 major gold jewellery stores
• Over 17 Indian clothing outlets
• 8+ Indian grocery stores
• Numerous authentic Indian restaurants
• Shops specializing in restaurant equipment and utensils
• A prominent Sikh temple and Hindu temple

Visitors come from across New Zealand, and even from Fiji and neighboring countries, to shop, dine, and experience Indian culture.

We proudly promote the spirit of:
Support Local. Shop Local. Eat Local.
